Catalonia Food & Wine: the Emporda Region
Bike - Self-Guided Tour

Overview
This one-week itinerary takes you through the Emporda, one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and fertile soil, the foothills of the mountains surrounding the plains provide ideal conditions for grape cultivation. Ancient farmers in the area chose to use the plains for planting olive trees while utilizing the slopes for terraced vineyards separated by dry-stone walls. Since 2005, the influential wine guru Robert Parker has put Emporda on the global wine map. Thanks to the hard work of local wineries, this region has received the designation of origin as Emporda.
Highlights
- Cycle the Emporda's beautiful landscapes
- Discover local traditions: cork manufacturing, anchovy production, olive oil producers
- The Costa Brava
- Salvador Dalí's museum in Figueres
- Eat in a Michelin-starred restaurant
- Girona

Good tour of an interesting part of Spain with great food, very good hotels. My favorite? The hotels, especially San Felieu, Toroella and Castello. And the old rail line routes, especially on way to Castello. I actually went back and did that 3 more times.

My favorites where the towns and accommodations at both Girona and Castelló d'Empurie
